Share
Happy New Year! It’s already January, I can’t believe it! After the frenzy of Christmas, I was lucky enough to have some time to relax. Now it’s the beginning of January and we’re all working on our New Year’s resolutions. One of my resolutions is to help my customers choose the jewellery that’s right for them or for the people they gift them to.
This year, I’ll be doing a series of blogs on birthstones and their alternatives. If you are stumped for a gift for that special someone, then birthstone jewellery is a perfect solution! Every month has its birthstone and alternative.
Garnet is the traditional birthstone for those born in the month of January. Garnet gemstones are usually known for their vibrant red colour, but did you know that garnets come in a variety of colours including shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, and even colourless? The most popular type of garnet is the red variety, which is known as pyrope.
Garnet and its history
Garnet is a type of silicate mineral that is found in a variety of rock types, including metamorphic and igneous. There are several different types of garnet, including almandine, pyrope, spessartine, and grossular. Each type of garnet has its own unique set of physical and chemical properties, which determine its colour and other characteristics.
Garnet is prized for its durability and versatility, making it a popular choice for jewellery over the centuries. Since the Bronze Age, jewellery makers have incorporated this gemstone in their jewellery. Garnet was the most used gemstone in the Late Roman Antique World. In fact, the name "garnet" comes from the Latin word "granatus," which means "like a seed." This is because garnet crystals often resemble the shape and size of pomegranate seeds. In more recent times, garnets have been used in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery as well as in Art Deco pieces.
In modern times, garnet is often used in rings, earrings, pendants, and other types of jewellery. Because garnets are durable, they can be set in a variety of metals including gold, silver, and platinum. Some people prefer the classic look of a gold setting, while others may prefer the modern look of a sterling silver setting.
Red garnet is often associated with love and passion and is believed to have energizing and revitalizing properties. Pink garnet, also known as rhodolite, is a softer and more feminine version of red garnet. It is often used in jewellery to represent love and commitment.
Orange garnet, also known as spessartine, is a vibrant and energetic stone that is said to bring joy and happiness to those who wear it. Yellow garnet, also known as demantoid, is a rare and highly prized type of garnet that is prized for its unique colour and sparkling lustre. Green garnet, also known as tsavorite, is a rare and highly prized type of garnet that is prized for its bright and vibrant green colour.
Garnet jewellery is a great choice for anyone who loves bold and beautiful jewellery. Whether you prefer a classic red garnet necklace or a more unique piece featuring another colour of garnet, there are countless options to choose from.
One thing to keep in mind when looking for garnet jewellery is that not all garnets are created equal. Some garnets may be treated to enhance their colour or clarity, so it's important to look for a reputable seller who can provide information about the specific garnet you are considering.
